THE DOKKODO
Inspired by Van Gogh and the Japonisme art movement
The Topic was based on a scripture titled the Dokkodo

Written by the famous Japanese samurai called Miyamoto Musashi over 370 years ago as he was giving away his possessions in preparation for his death,

The scripture emphasised the rules a human being should live by based on the lifestyle of a samurai from that period which in my opinion, can still be applicable to modern times, because they are very simple and can be applied in the form of common sense to bring less stress and not become overly attached to possessions.

The Concept is based on asymmetric balance that is a prominent feature from Japonisme, I have mixed the Koushiki type face with a Japanese calligraphy font that act as the 21 rules. per page, some of the rules are on paper, others are placed on transparent paper.

The book features Vivid landscape photography in full bleed and As well as Screen prints based of those photograph, that element was added to create a misbalance between the natural colours of the photography and combining them with ukiyo-e inspired colours.
I used tracing paper over some of images because I didn’t want the type and the photography creating a distraction from the photographs and screen prints, which lead me to separate all the different elements but in a consistent way that they all complement each other with the different themes.
